Broken glass and your garbage disposal

A garbage disposal is a very effective tool, which can toil many things precisely, but in case of glasses, it is not efficient enough. Sometimes, it causes some unfortunate accidents when a broken glass falls in your garbage disposal. If that happens, do not lose hope. It can be taken care of. All you have to do is to follow some steps and after that you will get rid of all those glass pieces. Let us have a discussion about this important topic. So, have patience and continue with your reading:

Step 1- Deal with the small pieces of glass

At first, be sure about the fact that the glasses are large in pieces and whether they are jamming the disposal blades or not. And, if the pieces are small, then your disposal blades can still work. They will not harm your disposal like the larger pieces. In fact, they are capable of sharpening your disposal blades. Once you are done with grounding the tiny pieces of glass, all you have to do is to fill your sink full of water and let it stream sluggishly into the disposal. It will ensure that all the remaining pieces have been removed.

Step-2-Deal with the larger pieces now

If you are sure that the glass pieces are large in shape, stop your disposal blades then and there. If you keep on grinding, the blades will be jammed, making it more difficult to remove the glass pieces.

Make sure to turn off your disposal and keep your hands out of it. It is needless to say that putting your hands down to the disposal with shrill edges of glass can trigger a very big accident. Use a kitchen tong to grasp the large pieces of glass. Reach your disposal carefully and grip a piece of glass, put it in a safe place like garbage can or a plastic bag. This process should be repeated until you have removed all the pieces of glass.

Another technique, which you can follow,is to cut down the bottom of a raw and big potato that fits the opening of the disposal. Then slide it through the disposal so that it can make its way to the bottom and in the way the potato will embed some of the glass pieces. Repeat this by sliding another piece of potato and continue the process until the disposal is completely free of glasses. Once you are done with this, turn on your disposal and grind the small remaining pieces.

Step 3- Check the disposal

After you are done with removing all the glasses from your disposal, turn on your disposal and your cold water to see whether the disposal is turning like it should be.

Step 4- Reset the disposal

Sometimes, after getting jammed with the glasses, disposals stop to turn. In that case, you need to reset your disposal to make it work again. To make it reset turn off the power switch then find out the reset button in your disposal, which you will find in the bottom of your disposal unit. After that, push the reset button and again, turn on the power switch.

Step 5- Extricate the disposal blades

Suppose, a piece of glass got trapped into the blades and you are not able to pull it out, and then turn of your disposal blade as soon as possible. After that, insert Allen wrench into the opening which is present in the bottom of your disposal. Next, turn on the wrench. Once, the blades become free from the glass, turn on the power after removing the wrench.

It is a big concern, if a glass accidentally falls into your garbage disposal. Not only it will harm your disposal but also it will trigger accident that can give you an unwanted trouble. So, go through the above written article and remove the glass step by step from your disposal.
